Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is the preferred insulating material of choice extensively use in the handling and transport of food packaging. The following properties make EPS the ideal packaging material:
Thermal insulation. EPS has a high thermal insulation factor due to its closed-cell structure that prevents the transfer of heat or cold. This quality protects fresh produce, perishable food and even medicine from sudden changes in temperature.
Shock absorption. EPS has a high energy absorption index that helps protect sensitive products, such as food and fresh soft produce, from any damage during storage, shelf stacking and transportation.
Lightweight packaging. EPS is 98% air and the lightest packaging material available, reducing the environmental impact of transporting products and saving on fuel consumption.
Hygienic nature. EPS is entirely inert, non-toxic and innocuous. This means it can be in direct contact with food without any health risks. EPS meets food contact regulatory standards and can be used to package food or pharmaceuticals.
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) manufactured by the Isowall Group is fast becoming recognized as the insulation material of choice by specifiers of “Bills of Quantities”. This comes largely as a result of our technical knowledge backed up by years of experience in the building and construction industry.
Resistance to moisture humidity. EPS maintains its excellent mechanical and thermal properties, even in humid conditions. The material is resistant to moisture because EPS does not absorb water or water vapour. No fungi or bacteria can grow on EPS, either.
Freshness retention. With the use of EPS packaging, the food is kept fresh for longer. Some research even indicates that fruits and vegetables retain their vitamin C content longer when packed in EPS compared to other food packaging materials.
Versatility and aesthetics. EPS is a versatile material. It can be cut in any size and shape, providing various storage options to hold food and beverages. EPS usually has a clean white appearance, but it can be easily coloured for marketing and promotional purposes in stores.
The Isowall Group has been manufacturing and distributing Isolite Block Moulded EPS since 1985, and Isolite Shape Moulded EPS since 1992. Isolite EPS products are used primarily for insulation, lightweight fillers and semi-rigid cushioning.
