EPS Applications and Benefits for Roof and Ceiling Insulation

Expanded polystyrene sheets and boards are used for thermal insulation, from prefabricated wall systems and decorative mouldings to underfloor tiles and insulated ceilings.

For roof and ceiling insulation, EPS panels provide a lightweight, durable and aesthetic insulating solution. The main applications include:

  • Under roof tile insulation. EPS panels can be fitted against the roof battens under the roof tiles for added thermal and acoustic insulation. The panels are easy to install and fit because of their low weight – EPS is 98% air. The load bearing on roof beams is minimal.
  • Flat roof insulation. EPS panels can be fitted above the waterproofing membrane for additional thermal and acoustic insulation in flat roof buildings, prolonging the durability of the building.
  • Ceiling insulation. EPS lightweight panels can be cut to create a tight fit between the ceiling trusses. Also, the insulated ceiling surface is washable and does not require painting or camouflaging.

Expanded polystyrene has a low surface emission with low heat capacity and conductivity that ensures excellent thermal resistance and energy conservation in residential and commercial buildings. The material is resistant to UV rays and weather damage such as rain and hail and protects against mould, fungi, bacteria, insects, birds or vermin.

For industrial and commercial buildings, FR grade EPS thermal insulation systems guarantee fire safety with no flame spread for underroof and side cladding insulation with or without sprinklers.

The Expanded Polystyrene Association of South Africa (EPSASA) generally recommends 80mm to 120mm EPS boards for ceiling and roof applications, depending on climatic conditions and fire-retardant properties.

Isolam insulating panels are ideal for insulating roofs, ceilings and walls. The panels have been tested by an independent testing authority and have been classified as class B / B1 / 2 / H&V.

The panels come in thicknesses from 30mm to 120mm and various lengths. The thermal resistance “R” of the panels ranges from 1.1 for 40mm panels to 3.7 for 120mm panels. The maximum working temperature of Isolam panels is 80°C.

Isolam panels are available in different moulding patterns with standard colours white and marble.
