Expanded polystyrene (EPS) blocks and sheets can be used and reused many times to prolong its lifespan and avoid the landfills.
- Reuse polystyrene boxes for in-transit
EPS packaging, in particular, polystyrene blocks, can be kept and reused regularly for cushioning fragile items during transportation. EPS boxes are lightweight and easy to cut or carve to fit a specific product or shape inside it. Keep the boxes and use them while in transit instead of throwing them out.
- Create DIY presentation mounts
EPS sheets and blocks can be used creatively by artists and crafters as wall mounts or DIY displays to show handcrafted work. Use the lightweight texture of the polystyrene foam to insert everything from badges and pins to jewellery. You can also customise the EPS boards or blocks by painting them. It’s easy and affordable!

- Provide drainage for plant pots
EPS blocks can also be useful in providing drainage, replacing gravel, pebbles or ceramic shards for drainage in plant pots. While not always ideal, this method works for most plants in-between moving them and transplanting to a new container. Use small EPS chunks to line the base of the planter.
- Use as floatation devices
EPS is extremely lightweight and buoyant, making it ideal for crafted surfboards and other floatation devices. EPS blocks can be cut to any size and shape to provide structure for floating structures such as docks, boat stands on marinas, swimming pools and even homes!
